Our country is one of the world’s worst offenders on marine plastic pollutions, with 0.28-0.75 million tonnes per year of plastic entering to oceans from coastal areas in Manila Bay. The high waste generation in our country is brought up by economic growth, combined with enhanced production and consumption.

In support for the United Nation’s Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), specifically SDG 14: Life Below Water, the students and faculty members of the College of Fisheries (CF) in Central Luzon State University (CLSU) conducted a coastal clean-up along Tondol Beach in Anda, Pangasinan on May 2, 2023.

This activity was part of their field activity in the course Coastal Resource Management under the mentorship of Dr. Lorenz J. Fajardo, the current Acting Dean of CF. This course provides opportunities for students to promote the conservation and sustainable use of the oceans, seas and marine resources for sustainable development.

The coastal clean-up was also participated by faculty and staff members from the college and Freshwater Aquaculture Center (FAC) namely Dr. Alvin T. Reyes, Ms. Cherry Ann G. Kindipan, Mr. Aries Paul D. Padron, Mr. Erick Aldwin G. Suarez, Mr. Mark Anthony V. Marquez, Ms. Avejoy C. Ramos and Ms. Mary Grace R. Padilla.
