A hybrid platform seminar on tilapia breeding in global contexts was held on May 5, 2023, at the Conference Hall of CF-FAC. The College of Fisheries teamed up with its long time research collaborator, GenoMar Philippines , represented by Ms. Thea Luz Pineda, the Breeding Manager of the East Asia Pacific.

Two Senior Researchers of GenoMar Genetics , AS Norway served as resource persons, Dr. Rajesh Joshi, who was involved in developing the first Single Nucleotide Polymorphism-chip array for tilapia and Dr. Skaarud Anders whose specialization is controlling inbreeding and optimizing breeding schemes in fish.

There were 136 online participants from Thailand, Peru, Nigeria, Mexico City, Morocco, Indonesia, Ehtiopia,Chile,Belgium, Australia and the Philippines while onsite audience totalled to 120.

The virtual participants were from the research centers, academe, students, researchers, aquaculturists, aquaculture technicians, Instructors, professors and senior scientists.

GenoMar Genetics group has always been the pioneer in the implementation of innovative breeding technologies in Nile tilapia by choosing the best performing individuals for a more profitable and sustainable tilapia industry. The transition of different selection goals and methods was highlighted from family based selection, using DNA information and genomic selection.
