The Central Luzon State University – College of Fisheries / Freshwater Aquaculture Center (CLSU – CF/FAC) in collaboration with the University Gender and Development Office, CF Student Government, Ichthyological Society, and the CF Graduate Student Association conducted the 6th In-House Student Research Review last April 20 – 21, 2023 with the theme, “Transcending Sustainable Development Goals in a Gender Responsive Community Through Fisheries Education and Research”.

The research conference was spearheaded in a hybrid setup where the Poster Presentation was held in the CF/FAC Conference Hall on the first day and the activity was shifted to a virtual event for the Paper Presentation the following day due to the unprecedented announcement that April 21 is a regular holiday in observance of Eid’l Fitr. The program was composed of plenary session and poster/paper presentation where in a total of 29 researches/narrative reports/review articles were featured covering various topics in aquaculture, post-harvest fisheries, aquatic ecology, fisheries management and bioeconomic modelling.

Invited resource speakers for this year’s In-House Review were Dr. Jaime A. Manalo IV, Head of the Socioeconomics Division, Central Experiment Station of the Department of Agriculture – Philippine Rice Research Institute (DA-PhilRice) and Dr. Andie John D. Tadeo, Director of Fisheries Research and Training Institute of Don Mariano Marcos Memorial State University – North La Union Campus (DMMMSU-NLUC FRTI). Dr. Manalo discussed some developments with respect to achieving targets in the Sustainable Development Goals and the importance of incorporating gender and development in research. Dr. Tadeo on the other hand tackled their developed technology on the Production of Solar Sea Salt in High-Density Polyethylene Platform and their current undertakings in transferring the technology in several coastal municipalities across the country.

One of the highlights of the activity was the search for the Best in Poster Presentation in Undergraduate Category, and the Best Paper and the Best in Oral Presentation in both Undergraduate and Graduate level. Ms. Imelda Rose D. Pimentel from the BSF3-1 emerged as the Best in Poster Presentation with her study entitled, “Fil-Kor Tilapia Kimbap: Incorporating Nile Tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus) Flesh in Korean Kimbap as an Alternative to Pork Meat”. For the Best in Oral Presentation in the Undergraduate Cluster, Ms. Jean Hazel B. Ganigan, a BSF3-1 student was pronounced as the champion with her study “The Feasibility of Nile Tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus) Pulverized Scales as an Additive on Malaysian Steam Coconut Pandan Cake (Kuih Talam Pandan)”.

The study entitled, “An Assessment on Illegal, Unreported and Unregulated Fishing on San Felipe, Zambales” was selected as the Best Paper in the Undergraduate Level and it was presented by Ms. Aidell Jane G. Lupa, a BSF4-1 student. In the Graduate category, Ms. Michelle Grace B. Aquino, a Doctor of Philosophy in Aquaculture student was named as the Best in Oral Presentation and their study entitled, “Estimates of Profitability and Technical Efficiency of Tuna Handline Fishing Fleet: A Case Study in Infanta, Pangasinan, Philippines was recognized as the Best Paper”.

Meanwhile, the evaluators for the oral presentation for both Undergraduate and Graduate categories were Dr. Andie John D. Tadeo, Director of DMMMSU – NLUC FRTI; Dr. Angelito E. Dela Cruz, Head of the Fish Production Section of the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources – National Freshwater Fisheries Technology Center (BFAR – NFFTC); and Dr. Hazel Monica M. Peralta, Head of the Department of Aquatic Resources, Ecology and Management of the CLSU – College of Fisheries.
